Differences Between Safety Flags - Their Types and Features Explained
Judging by their looks, warning whips seem to be very straight forward and simple enough in order for you to figure out what will work best for your vehicle and circumstance. But in practice, this isn't the case and as you may know, these flags are made to withstand high winds and provide visibility in almost every weather - this being the case only if you get the right one. In order to make your choice as easy and straightforward as the looks of a flag, we are going to take a look at the different flags and when they are best applicable. There are a total of two main categories and four subcategories.
Lighted
This category is divided into these two subcategories: general purpose and heavy-duty flags. General purpose flags are made from a fluorescent nylon mesh together with a hex base mount, lamp socket, a hot plug with 30cm pigtail and a reflective fibreglass whip. As most vehicle safety flags the general purpose flag also includes heavy-duty wiring in order to reduce shorts from extreme temperatures. It comes in various flag colours and there are also telescopic models and other types available with split pole and quick disconnect base for easy attachment end removal.
Heavy-duty flags have a bigger 45 cm pigtail, a stronger fluorescent nylon mesh with the added choice of a lighting option, heavy-duty spring mounting base and a threaded hex base. This type also has a high-quality cable run through the hex base and to the lamp in order to eliminate multiple solder joints and pinched wires, it also comes in various flag colours and lighting options. Obviously, this is the more durable, weather resistant whip.
Non-Lighted
These two types of vehicle safety flags are divided into, general purpose and light-duty warning whips. Here the general purpose safety flag doesn't include a hot plug but its made of the same material as the lighted general purpose flag. It also has the same quick disconnect base and split pole features with the option for an added fibreglass whip. The general purpose flag is usually the longest one.
Light duty safety flags are even simpler, as they only come with an orange nylon-mesh flag that has a threaded hex mount and a 2-meter long non-lighted fibreglass whip as the default set-up. Because of its simple design, the light-duty warning whip has more colour options than any other whip, but it is a less common choice. The light-duty security flag has a lack of a hitch mount.
