A Review on the History of Winchester Company

Despite all the ups and downs that this company has had throughout its existence, it has made some revolutionary and groundbreaking products that had the firearm industry in awe. Of course, a crash course of Winchester's history is not going to be as much fun as having to name every single fall and every single rise they've had in their time, but unfortunately, you'd have to spend all day reading it. That's why we are going to review the history of this company through the achievements it made that marked its position as a leading firearm conglomerate.

Early Years

After taking over the wheel of an arms company that had just fallen into bankruptcy, Oliver Winchester together with his partner John M. Davies made the first, .44 Henry round with the help of Benjamin Henry. The firearm that used this round was also quite similar to the one made from the previous maker but it was adapted so it would use the new round. This happened in 1857 which made the firearm being used in the Civil war until a dispute in 1866 that lead to a company name change. This marked the start of a great era for the Winchester company which made them beat the competition during both World War I and II.

The 20th Century Mark

The race for the best self-loading rifle was between Winchester and its biggest rival Browning, which made patents that were sold to the British and US army regarding the, .50 calibre machine gun. The commercial rights of this firearm were owned by Winchester at the time despite the gun being made by engineers of both companies. In the second World War, a team of eight engineers from the Winchester company made three somewhat different rifles, the M1 Carbine, M1 Garand and the M14.

Although they were mass produced for the US army, after Wolrd War II, Winchester started having some financial issues but they still had their firearms featured in movies during the 50s. In 1965 they introduced the AA shotshell which quickly became the standard for clay target shooters. The year after Winchester had its 100-year anniversary, which also marked a starting point in making more industry standard rifles and slugs, being involved in setting records, and having firearms being put in a museum.

New Era

After all those not so quiet years, Winchester starts bringing remastered versions of old guns back, which included a limited edition 1894 rifle in honour of Oliver Winchester's 200th birthday with collectible ammunition. They also set three new records with the Winchester Super X2 and in 2008 the re-introduce the legendary Model 70. In 2016 they re-introduce a set of old firearms including the company's very first rifle - 1866 Yellow boy. As of 2019, they have introduced a brand new rifle called the Wildcat.
